Topic: Science Versus Religion

Why is topic important?

I believe this topic is important to talk about because it teaches about how science and religion were enemies back then, a log time ago, and still are today. It shows us that this battle will forever be there although throughout the years we are finding ways as a society to coexist with both of them instead of let them separate us.

Key Ideas

-The first chapter of Genesis in the Old Testament describes God's creation of the earth and how he created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh day. It states, “In 6 days, God created day and night, sky and the sea, vegetation and the land, stars, moon and the sun, sea creatures including birds and the fish, mankind and animals, and on the seventh day, God rested”(Genesis 1:1-31,2:1-3). Although, in the 1900’s Alexander Friedmann and Georges Lemaître introduced what is known as the big bang theory, the leading explanation of how the universe was created. The theory stated that our universe sprang into existence around 13.7 billion years ago by a tremendous explosion and is continuously growing.

- In the catholic religion, mankind is said to be created from the famous story of Adam and Eve. Although, scientific evidence shows that the physical and behavioral traits of all people originated from apelike ancestors and have evolved over time.

- Pope Francis proposed an alliance, "The big bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but rather requires it. Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

Why is it important to know this information?

It is overall important to know the history of both science and religion in order for one to form their own beliefs.

How might this help someone personally?

If someone is struggling with trying to make both science and religion coexist in their lives this information will help them. It will inform them that there many people who are just as confused about life and creation and don't know what one to believe although as a society we can make both of them exist.
