The second half of Chapter 14 relates to Fur in Global Commerce and the Atlantic Slave Trade. Both of these historical events were sad to read and learn about because they significantly hurt both people and animals. After the discovery of North America and Siberia, the world market gained access to massive populations of animals with desirable furs and skins. The Europe population grew and that only led to more demands for furs and animal skins. During this tie the region experienced a Little Ice Age during which people demanded furs to keep warm. Beaver, and deer populations were hunted for their skins and furs and goods were being traded for American and Siberian furs. This is very sad because this has not totally disappeared in todays societies. Animals are continuing to become extinct do to hunting nd killing for their fur which is completely wrong. The Atlantic Slave trade was also very sad to read about and it had many consequences on Africa. About 12.5 million Africans were sent on the Middle Passage and almost 2 million died before reaching the Americas; the slaves were primarily male and used overwhelmingly for plantation agriculture; slave status became hereditary; slaves had no rights at all; and the slaves were racially distinct “Africans."
African slave traders were actively traded humans for weapons and other European and Indian goods. This whole concept disgusts. me. it is so sad to think of how these poor innocent people were treated. The Atlantic slave trade was the most recent exchange and owning of human beings that existed on a large scale.
